Loved it! This was by far my most favorite in the series!

Danica Holdaway

My least favorite of the trilogy but also enjoyed how she was able to intertwine everyone’s stories and development!

Honestly I enjoyed the ending。 Much more enjoyable than the second book, but the first part of this book can be a slog。 We love some good character development。

I was just disappointed by the end of this series。 It was really slow and then I just don't feel satisfied by the end。 I was just disappointed by the end of this series。 It was really slow and then I just don't feel satisfied by the end。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Sigh。。。。。。 there’s a lot of stupid decisions that get made in this one that could’ve been avoided by communication and logical thought。 It hurt my soul throughout most of the entire book。 And I’ve never been against two characters not being together but I was totally over Rhen and absolutely wanted him to end up alone。 Over。 It。 And this this possible other lady, the spy? Nope。 Not even worth teasing that as a compatible partner。 Totally unnecessary to the story。 🙄

Wow。 I don't know what to say about this book。 I don't even know where to start this review。 I guess I'm just going to plunge into a disorganized mess of thoughts and ramblings。First off, even though this is being billed as the end of the series, there has to be more planned for this series, or at least in this world。 (view spoiler)[Maybe the scraver Nakiis falling for Jo? Because I would be DOWN for that。 (hide spoiler)] There's just too much going on in the end that doesn't feel resolved at al Wow。 I don't know what to say about this book。 I don't even know where to start this review。 I guess I'm just going to plunge into a disorganized mess of thoughts and ramblings。First off, even though this is being billed as the end of the series, there has to be more planned for this series, or at least in this world。 (view spoiler)[Maybe the scraver Nakiis falling for Jo? Because I would be DOWN for that。 (hide spoiler)] There's just too much going on in the end that doesn't feel resolved at all。 I mean, new plot elements were being added to the story in the last fifty chapters, so it feels super weird if the author doesn't continue stories in this world。 (view spoiler)[Like Nakiis and Jo。 :P (hide spoiler)] And I'll probably read them, (view spoiler)[especially if it is Nakiis/Jo (hide spoiler)]。 This one felt like a middle book in a series and not the end。Second, holy toxic relationship justifications, Batman。 (view spoiler)[I used to feel sorry for Rhen, like during the first book, because he had a really, really, REALLY steep penalty to pay just because he had a one night stand with a sorceress and didn't catch feelings for her。 I always felt his "punishment" didn't suit what the sorceress viewed as "the crime。" And then that empathy stopped the moment he dragged an innocent boy out into the yard and whipped him until he bled to get Grey to talk to him。 If a character does something like that, I'm usually out。 But this whole book, we are shown that Rhen REALLY wasn't so bad because him whipping a boy guilty of NOTHING is just as bad as Grey keeping his true identity secret from Rhen, because GREY SUSPECTED THAT RHEN WOULD ACT JUST LIKE HE DID。 But that secret, borne of self-preservation, is viewed as just as bad as Rhen whipping an innocent boy。 Nope。 I'm not buying that steaming pile of garbage, thanks。I also got really, really grossed out by Jake and Harper continually comparing Harper to their mother, and not in a good way。 Jake (and even Harper herself agreed for most of the book) argued that Harper's relationship was just as toxic as the relationship their mother had had with their father, and how much that hurt everyone。 Like, Harper's lizard brain TOTALLY KNOWS that Rhen is not good for her, but she somehow justifies this in her head by gaslighting HERSELF into somehow accepting some of the blame for what happened between Grey and Rhen in the last book。 If only, she thinks to herself as she twists herself into knots over how she can portray Rhen in a better light, she had ASKED Rhen to be, you know, a decent fucking person and not torture an innocent kid in an attempt to break his half-brother into revealing a secret that said half-brother has kept secret because he's afraid of Rhen cracking just like this。 That's it! If she had only ASKED him to be a good person, then he would have HAD to have been a good person, since he denies her nothing! It's HER FAULT, you see! Look, when you have a good, trusting, non-toxic relationship with a family member, and said family member warns you away from a potential romantic partner, LISTEN TO THEM。 There are red flags waving that you might not be able to see。 And Jake does exactly this - he ends up picking Grey's side against Rhen。 Her brother literally sides with the enemy of his sister's fiancé, and with a guy that Jake really couldn't stand for quite some time in the first book。 Does that not say SOMETHING HUGE? Because it should。 (hide spoiler)]So, yeah。 Hated that。I basically kept reading the book because of Grey。 I really liked him as a character; he's my favorite in this series。 (view spoiler)[I like him fine with Lia Mara, but I would like her a bit more if she had a bit more of a spine。 She did develop a better one as the story progressed, but I'd like to see some fire-breathing bitch queen shit coming from her。*cough*I still ship Grey with Harper, even though it's never going to happen。 I liked their chemistry together, and I think the story would have been so much better if the princess fell in love not with the prince, but the prince's soldier。 Forbidden love is my jam。 Hell, Harper even admitted in this book that the potential had been there, but they just didn't walk down that road。 Maybe she should have。 XD*cough* (hide spoiler)] The ending felt weird to me for many reasons, and not just because of the aforementioned "it didn't really feel like an ending at all。" (view spoiler)[I don't get why Rhen wouldn't fight for the throne a bit more。 I mean, look at the royalty in various countries like England, France, Spain, Austrio-Hungary, etc。 They would take one another out and did not give two fucks about it。 And why did Grey default to being the ruler of Emberfall? Because Rhen was a dick? I feel like he could have made a justifiable case on why he should have the throne instead of Grey。 Still not quite sure why he didn't try to maintain it。 And then I did feel a bit sorry for the bastard as he moped around in the kingdom he had given up, trying to tell himself what a relief it was to not have to make all the decisions anymore。 That felt a little sad。 (hide spoiler)](view spoiler)[Rhen is still a Grade A dick。 Don't get me wrong。 (hide spoiler)]So basically, what did I just read?I mean, I'll still probably read the next book set in this world, because the author can write when she wants to。 I just didn't like this book。 I think there is potential, though。 (view spoiler)[I did my best, but I was really, really stoned while writing this。 I may come back to edit this later。 I might not, because I'm sure this will make me cringe when I read it in the future。 You're welcome, future me。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

*insert Dora singing we did it here*I finished it, thank the lord! This was, how do I say this。。 Not a good conclusion to a series。 I absolutely adored the first book, really enjoyed the second one, but this one was just not it for me。 I’d say about 20% of this book was filled with action and suspense and the other 80% was so boring。 Literally nothing happened AT ALL。 I’ sooo bummed because I had quite high expectations。 Alas, hate to say that I just didn’t enjoy it。

Tbh at first I was a bit unsure if it was the right time to pick this book up。 It has been a year since I’ve read the second book and I didn’t remember that much。 Also I haven’t ready anything fantasy like recently。I‘m so glad I‘ve read this book tho。 It was a great finale, even tho some parts of the storyline were a bit repetitive。 Brigid Kemmerer‘s greatest strength are her characters。 I freaking love Grey and Lia Mara and all the others。 I get why Rhen‘s the way he is during all of it, and wh Tbh at first I was a bit unsure if it was the right time to pick this book up。 It has been a year since I’ve read the second book and I didn’t remember that much。 Also I haven’t ready anything fantasy like recently。I‘m so glad I‘ve read this book tho。 It was a great finale, even tho some parts of the storyline were a bit repetitive。 Brigid Kemmerer‘s greatest strength are her characters。 I freaking love Grey and Lia Mara and all the others。 I get why Rhen‘s the way he is during all of it, and what Harper’s role was。 It was nice to get closure about all of it。 。。。more

Reading this book felt like coming home - the world of Cursebreakers is unique in my heart and I couldn’t be happier with its conclusion I got all the friendship and romantic moments I could have asked for and my favorite characters carried this conclusion。 So to Grey, Lia Mara, Harper, and Rhen I’m so proud of all of you and thanks for being there 🥰

I really enjoyed it, even though it's my least favorite book in the trilogy。It felt mostly not important, nothing really seemed to happen before the end。But I love the whole trilogy still, it just might have been better as a duology。 I really enjoyed it, even though it's my least favorite book in the trilogy。It felt mostly not important, nothing really seemed to happen before the end。But I love the whole trilogy still, it just might have been better as a duology。 。。。more

Well I've read the entirety of the Cursebreakers series, in the hopes that I would finally become converted into a true fan of the series (especially since I've adored Brigid Kemmerer's previous YA contemporary books)。 However, as you probably can guess from my 3 star rating, the series never found its footing for me - not even the last week, where all the loose ends are wrapped up。Kemmerer ambitiously takes on four different POVs here, alternating between our four main leads - Harper, Rhen, Gre Well I've read the entirety of the Cursebreakers series, in the hopes that I would finally become converted into a true fan of the series (especially since I've adored Brigid Kemmerer's previous YA contemporary books)。 However, as you probably can guess from my 3 star rating, the series never found its footing for me - not even the last week, where all the loose ends are wrapped up。Kemmerer ambitiously takes on four different POVs here, alternating between our four main leads - Harper, Rhen, Grey and Lia Maria。 The first two are in Emberfell, as Rhen grapples with his decision to enter into a war with Syhl Shallow and his older brother, Grey。 Not to mention, Rhen is hiding a pretty big secret of his own from Harper。 (view spoiler)[ And that's the return of Lilith, the enchantress that they'd all believed was gone for good。 (hide spoiler)] Rhen is trying to unite Emberfell in preparation of war, but his own people do not seem to trust in his ability to rule。 Harper and Rhen's relationship has also become incredibly strained, due to his terrible behavior previously and Harper's disappointment at his choices。 Meanwhile, Grey and Lia Maria are trying to reign over a disunited Syhl Shallow, one that mistrusts magic and that the man who wields it is so close to Lia Maria。 Lia Maria believes in compassion and empathy, whereas her mother ruled through cruelty and fear - her people are unused to her methods and are hesitant about the war that is on the horizon。 When an assassination attempt is made on Lia Maria, it becomes clear that she has more enemies in the kingdom than she believed。 At the same time as Grey is trying to help Lia Maria adapt to her rule, he is also beset with difficulties in getting the military to trust him - understandably so, since he was Commander of the enemy's force shortly before this。A Vow So Bold and Deadly should've been an exciting read because of the conflict that's on the horizon。 However, I just found certain moments of the book to be repetitive of the earlier themes - Rhen still refuses to trust Harper with his fears and secrets; Harper continues to be impulsive and the two of them really do not communicate well。 (view spoiler)[ Rhen could've saved a lot of trouble if he had just told Harper that Lilith was back and that he was frightened that she would get hurt。 (hide spoiler)] I actually appreciated the scenes at Syhl Shallow a little more because at least there was some progress there - Lia Maria is trying to rule a kingdom that may not want to be ruled in the way that she envisions, how is she to overcome that? Grey's rapprochement with her forces was also interesting, especially as he has to manage his own expectations about how his previous foes view him and his previous allegiance。I also wished that the conflict was resolved in a more interesting manner。 Instead, the climax was just。。。anti-climatic。 (view spoiler)[ Basically Rhen is tortured by Lilith and Harper manages to convince Grey and his forces to mount a rescue。。。which basically involves stumbling across Rhen in the castle and then Grey just turns Rhen into a monster again to battle Lilith? And Rhen just tears Lilith apart as a monster? Which, honestly, he could've already done in the first book。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

I really loved this series, but I didn't love this book as much as the first two。 There were a lot of things I did love though! The world was magical。 I found it really intriguing to see two countries going to war with each other, but wanting both sides to win。 That was such an interesting take。I really loved to see Harper stand up for herself。 I loved to see Lia Mara make hard decisions even when they were difficult。Overall, I really liked the book, but the ending fell a little bit flat for me。 I really loved this series, but I didn't love this book as much as the first two。 There were a lot of things I did love though! The world was magical。 I found it really intriguing to see two countries going to war with each other, but wanting both sides to win。 That was such an interesting take。I really loved to see Harper stand up for herself。 I loved to see Lia Mara make hard decisions even when they were difficult。Overall, I really liked the book, but the ending fell a little bit flat for me。 I don't understand why it ended with several chapters all about the men with only tiny mentions of the women。 And there was so much whining。 With such strong, awesome women characters, I wish they had been featured more in those last few chapters。I also don't understand why the rulers of the kingdoms ended up to be who they were。 I guess it was fine that it worked out the way it did。 I just felt like it was set up to turn out a different way, so I felt confused。Even those things weren't that bad。 I still enjoyed reading the book。But the very last few paragraphs did make me upset。 If that part had been different, I may have come away with a more positive impression overall。This isn't really a spoiler because it doesn't give anything away, but the very last few paragraphs show a barmaid flirting with the men。 In a series where the plot was mostly about the romance, I was frustrated that it ended like that。I wanted to see the happily ever afters with the people I had come to love。 Instead, I got a random scene with a barmaid flirting with men who were very much taken。 The flirting was innocent, but。。。 where were the women? Why did it have to end with the men interacting with a random barmaid? It just felt like a weird ending for a series that focused so much on romance。 I wanted it to end with a happy romantic moment。 Instead it ended with a flirtatious scene with a barmaid who wasn't important to the story。I might go back and read some of the beginning and middle chapters again because I really did love a lot of things about this book。 Going back and reading some of my favorite chapters might help me remember that feeling, which is how I want to remember this series。 。。。more

I struggle with writing this review, not because the book was bad。 In fact: it was wonderful。 I really have come to find that I enjoy Kemmerer's style of writing。 That's not to be questioned。 Instead, I just take issue with the story。 I've never read a book where I felt like the wrong story was being told。 Where I felt like a character's choices were so utterly out of character。 This began in the second book when Harper did not leave with Grey。 She should have。 Her brother and Grey were going, a I struggle with writing this review, not because the book was bad。 In fact: it was wonderful。 I really have come to find that I enjoy Kemmerer's style of writing。 That's not to be questioned。 Instead, I just take issue with the story。 I've never read a book where I felt like the wrong story was being told。 Where I felt like a character's choices were so utterly out of character。 This began in the second book when Harper did not leave with Grey。 She should have。 Her brother and Grey were going, all that was left was Rhen。 A man that she didn't even know if she loved at the time。 She continued to pay for that all through this book—even having a moment where she is like: Oh, am I the bad guy? Barring even from the fact that I think that Grey and Harper had more chemistry than Rhen and Harper, it's just frustrating to see the first book followed like this。 *I'm adding more here just because I am stewing in my dissatisfaction。 That's it: I'm walking away from this book unsatisfied because there is so much from the first book that just fizzles out。 Grey's feelings for Harper just disappear but they're not resolved。 Lia Mara is jealous of Harper because she sees the way that Grey acts with her, but nothing ever comes of it。 Things like that just leave me so completely unsatisfied, it feels like the Kemmerer is just starting a new story here。 It makes me sad for the characters and who they are at the beginning of the series。Harper and Grey were the reason that I was sucked into this series, and it just feels like a let down in that sense。 Yet, I can't bring myself to rate it lower because in spite of it all, it wasn't a BAD book。 。。。more
